The FullDome Festival is considered the most important international festival for the presentation and awarding of fulldome shows. Since its foundation in 2007, the festival has established itself as a discussion forum for the technical and artistic development of the young medium of 360° fulldome projection. With about 800 contributions from 30 nations and close to 10.000 visitors from 2007 till today, the FDF is one of the biggest international festivals of its kind. We focus on artistic experiments by freelance producers, media artists and students in the 360-degree dome. The film program is accompanied by workshops, lectures and performances. Das FullDome Festival Jena gilt als das bedeutendste internationale Festival zur Präsentation und Prämierung von Fulldome Shows. Seit seiner Gründung im Jahr 2007 hat sich das Festival als Diskussionsforum zur technischen und künstlerischen Entwicklung des jungen Mediums der 360°-Ganzkuppelprojektion etabliert. Das FullDome Festival findet alljährlich meist an einem Maiwochenende im Zeiss-Planetarium Jena statt. Gezeigt werden ausschließlich neu produzierte Fulldome Shows von professionellen, studentischen und freien Produzenten und Medienkünstlern aus aller Welt. Begleitet wird das mehrtägige Programm von Workshops, Vorträgen und Performances. The acadamenic chair for Immersive Media at the Bauhaus University Weimar is always an intergral part of the festival. Fulldome classes have been established in the Media Art and Design program, where 2D and 3D animation, spatial sound design, 360-degree camera work, music visualization and experimental media design are being taught. Enhanced by acting, performances and real-time applications, an immersive theater show is produced annually in cooperation with professional artists, the show traditionally premieres at the Fulldome Festival in May.
Mit dem Festival eng verwoben ist die Honorarprofessur Immersive Medien an der Bauhaus Universität Weimar. Digitale Fulldomeprojektion und Spatial Sound Design haben sich als eigener Schwerpunkt im Studiengang Medienkunst und -gestaltung etabliert, bei dem Kenntnisse und Lerninhalte aus 2D und 3D-Animation, Spatial Sound, 360-Grad-Kameraführung, Musikvisualisierung und experimentelle Mediengestaltung zusammenfließen. Erweitert durch Schauspiel, Performance und Realtime-Applikationen wird in Kooperation mit externen Künstlern jährlich eine immersive Theater-Show produziert, die traditionell beim Fulldome Festival Premiere feiert.
